Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Senior Payroll Specialist (SPS) is responsible for the accurate and timely execution of the full payroll cycle within Vallen.  The SPS is required to ensure that Vallen remains in compliance within all the provinces where we operate.  A working knowledge of payroll legislation across various Canadian provinces is required.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Oversee, prepare and execute full cycle, national payroll ensuring best practices are adhered to
  • Utilizing Time & Attendance, ensure payroll for all hourly paid associates is processed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ensure payroll for salaried staff is processed accurately and in a timely manner
  • Process and reconcile remittances such as source deductions and RRSPs/DPSPs/TFSAs
  • Government Annual Returns for example: BC EHT, ON EHT etc.
  • Maintain records of all vacation entitlements and usage, outstanding lieu time and sick days taken within the payroll system
  • Prepare, calculate and import any required payroll adjustments
  • Process benefits, expenses, and allowances
  • Review associate records with supporting documentation for new hires, current associates and terminated associates
  • Prepare year-end associate tax slips and/or forms and submitting government filings to meet deadlines (eg: T4s & T2200s)
  • Lead the implementation of new payroll processes and systems
  • Respond to associate inquiries for payroll issues or concerns
  • Identify any areas of improvement within the payroll process
  • Maintain confidential information by adhering to legal and ethical standards 
  • Follow all HSE policies and guidelines


Education, Training and Experience


  • Current Canadian Payroll Association certification (PCP or CPM) or equivalent work experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat with advanced Excel skills
  • Excellent organization and mathematical skills
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Knowledge of ADP, including Time & Attendance preferred
  • Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of payroll
  • Experience within a complex payroll environment of 400+ associates
