Reporting to the RDC Manager, the Transportation Manager is responsible for providing business and operational leadership while managing all duties related to the Outbound transportation department. The role will provide direction and oversight of the day-to-day operational functions in transportation. This will also include training, compliance, budgeting, reporting, and administration. This position works closely with and builds strong relationships with other departments to achieve a greater level of corporate performance.

 

What you will do:

  • You will be an integral member of the Supply Chain Team in developing strategic operational plans as well as enhancing productivity and efficiency throughout the Company operations specific to transportation.
  • Manage and optimize delivery routes to support the NYS territory. 
  • Work closely with the sales team to resolve delivery issues timely and work on a strategy to ensure future support. 
  • Track local, state, and federal transportation regulations to ensure compliance. 
  • Oversee and develop drivers through one-on-one coaching, training on policy and procedures, assisting in problem resolution when required, and leading by example. 
  • Review driver performance, productivity, and safety targets.
  • Participate in building high-performing teams by interviewing and hiring warehouse personnel.
  • Work with the Director of Transportation to develop and maintain company-wide truck standards including equipment, appearance, capacity, and safety measures.
  • Work with the Director of Transportation to obtain truck lease quotations, approve final lease documents, and establish strong relationships with local dealers. 
  • Maintain truck files and Cooper vehicle list to ensure timely renewal notification, accurate invoicing, and attainment of all negotiated discounts. 
  • Responsible for selecting cost-effective LTL carriers for outbound shipments in conjunction with Sonepar initiatives aimed at securing the best rates and carriers for Cooper; review and approve LTL carrier billing, assist operations with use of the LTL bill of lading process, and provide feedback on carrier performance
  • Stay current with DOT, OSHA, and FMCSA regulations and recommendations; In conjunction with the Director of Transportation create and communicate Cooper policy in support of standards and expectations to ensure compliance across all locations.
  • Develop and administer the database to track driver medical card status, driver qualification files, training, license status, and other factors as needed to ensure an available and adequate driver pool.
  • Participate in and follow all Cooper policies, guidelines, and procedures (safety, Anti-Harassment, Ethics, and others).
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

 

What you will bring:

 

  • A minimum of three years managing a transportation department.
  • Complete understanding of DOT, OSHA, and FMCSA regulations. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills which allow cross-functional collaboration.
  • Strong technical skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively work with and coach associates. 

 

 

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent use of computers and other technology necessary to perform job duties.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the facility.
  • Ability to travel using a personal vehicle to various locations, as needed.

 

*Some travel will be required (no overnights) 90% Syracuse / 10% travel in the upstate NY territory.

 

Pay Rate: $58,000 - $65,000

Location: Syracuse, NY

Work Hours:  7AM - 4PM
